More information about The Gardens of Anuncia
Following a world premiere at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in 2021, The Gardens of Anuncia comes to New York with a cast of celebrated actresses. Priscilla Lopez, beloved for her performance in the original cast of A Chorus Line, leads the show as Anuncia.
Anuncia is the stand-in for Daniele, whose career on the New York theatre scene spans 60 years. She's best known for directing and choreographing Annie Get Your Gun and Once on This Island and choreographing shows like Ragtime. Daniele is also a regular collaborator of fellow dance legend Chita Rivera, as Daniele staged her shows The Visit and Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life. In 2020, she received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
What to watch for
- The Gardens of Anuncia off Broadway is Daniele and LaChiusa's fifth show at Lincoln Center within 30 years, following Marie Christine, Hello Again, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Bernarda Alba.
- Like Bernarda Alba, whose score incorporated flamenco, The Gardens of Anuncia has a Latin-inspired score, this time with tango influences.
- The Gardens of Anuncia calls to mind Evita, in that it brings up the Peróns. Daniele once called Gardens, though, the "antithesis" of Evita, as her musical doesn't cast the Peróns as "heroic" characters.
- Though Anuncia spends the show tending a garden, that garden doesn't appear on stage. It's more of a metaphor, LaChiusa has said, for reinvention, growth, and the things any given person cares for in their life.
