About Tennessee Williams's The Night of the Iguana

Six wayward souls. One hotel. One night. Tennessee Williams's The Night of the Iguana, a stormy, classic play about the ways people change each other's lives, returns for a rare New York production with a starry cast. Get The Night of the Iguana tickets on TodayTix.

Spend an evening with Emmy nominee Tim Daly (The Sopranos), Tony nominees Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent) and Austin Pendleton (A Beautiful Mind, The Little Foxes), Drama Desk Award nominee Lea DeLaria (Orange Is the New Black), and Off-Broadway veteran Jean Lichty (The Traveling Lady) at the Costa Verde Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. What happens when four women, a defrocked priest, and a 97-year-old poet get tangled in each other's inner turmoils as a storm rages on outside? There's only one way to find out.

Directed by Tony Award winner and six-time nominee Emily Mann, this Night of the Iguana brings a 20th-century classic into the modern day and brings together some of today's greatest theatre talents. Get tickets to The Night of the Iguana in New York on TodayTix.

More information about Tennessee Williams's The Night of the Iguana

The Night of the Iguana play began as a short story Williams wrote in 1948. He expanded it into a one-act stage show in 1959, presented two different three-act versions in 1959 and 1960, and finally arrived at the version we know today for the 1961 Broadway premiere, which earned three Tony nominations, including Best Play.

Three Broadway revivals have taken place since, most recently in 1996. The 2023 Off-Broadway production began as a digital benefit reading in 2020, also directed by Mann. The live premiere at the Pershing Square Signature Center marks the first major revival of The Night of the Iguana off Broadway.

What to watch for

  • In the play, an iguana is tied up at the Costa Verde Hotel, giving the show its name. The iguana has multiple symbolic meanings.
  • Mann is no stranger to Tennessee Williams: She directed his famous A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway in 2012.
  • The Night of the Iguana marks a reunion for Mann and Rubin-Vega, who starred in Mann's A Streetcar Named Desire. Rubin-Vega also performed in 2004's Tony-nominated Anna in the Tropics, which Mann produced.
  • The character of Reverend Shannon is based in part on Williams's real-life cousin, Reverend Sidney Lanier, who resigned from the priesthood in 1965. He was also very active in New York theatre.
  • Joni Mitchell released a song in 2007 titled "Night of the Iguana," inspired by Williams's play.
