More information about What Became of Us

Creating two casts for What Became of Us is no gimmick; it’s actually how playwright Shayan Lotfi imagined his piece. “My intention for What Became of Us has always been that the roles would alternate between separate pairings of actors from different diasporic backgrounds,” Lotfi said. “I am thrilled that Atlantic has supported this by bringing together this remarkable cast.”

Having two casts broadens the play’s interpretation and lets it be flexible to actors of varying cultural backgrounds. The play explores assimilation, immigration, and what it means to call a place home, themes universal to many people who live in one place but are perhaps from another. In his play, Lotfi keeps the language specific to the characters but flexible to their heritage, meaning various diasporas may see themselves in the story at hand. With so many in the United States having ancestors from other countries, the play can easily speak to multiple audiences.

What to watch for

  • Atlantic Theater Company is celebrated for its groundbreaking plays and original work, which often, as in the case of Spring Awakening, Kimberly Akimbo, and Days of Wine and Roses, head to Broadway for larger runs.
  • The casts feature award-winning talent: Tony Shalhoub has won a Tony Award for The Band’s Visit and an Emmy for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and opposite him is Emmy Award winner Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Saddam). Similarly, BD Wong took home a Tony for M. Butterfly, and his co-star Rosalind Chao is now in the popular Netflix show 3 Body Problem.
  • What Became of Us is not only exciting because of its two casts but it also marks the off-Broadway debut of the playwright, Shayan Lotfi. Lofti has developed work with the Atlantic before, where he is the Tow Playwright-in-Residence, and has also created works while at MacDowell as a fellow.
  • Jennifer Chang has directed works at Berkeley Rep, Milwaukee Rep, and Signature Theatre in Washington, DC where her King of the Yees staging was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Best Production.
