About The Welkin

A new play from Lucy Kirkwood, author of the Tony-nominated drama The Children, this US premiere is a mischievous and darkly funny look at rural community and the seemingly ordinary lives within it. Experience The Welkin in New York and travel back to the 1700s. Set in the English countryside, The Welkin follows a town as it awaits the return of Halley’s comet. However, bigger news may eclipse the event: a woman is sentenced to death but tries to evade her penalty by claiming she is pregnant. Twelve women come together to determine her truth, and fate. Sarah Benson directs this new production fresh off her acclaimed run of Teeth, and previously she took home an Obie Award for directing Fairview, which won a Pulitzer Prize.

Panel of 12 women in 1759 english village, Deals w whether woman murder-suspect is w child, Saving her from being hanged, Mash-up 12 angry men/the crucible/handmaids tale

See it if jaw-dropping moments; powerful script; 13 strong/some hilarious perfs led by Sandra Oh; potentl 2 be feminist classic

Don’t see it if tries 2 do 2 many things; hyper-dramatic, so many 2nd act twists, derails narrative; melding 18th cent/modrn women's sensiblities uneven

Thought-provoking, Resonant, Intense, Absorbing, Great acting

See it if A dark story about a woman, community &democracy set in the past, could not be more relevant today.Excellent, stunning performances.

Don’t see it if Some unnecessary side stories; the writing is very audacious & your reaction may be, at times, more visceral than intellectual.

Great writing, Great ensemble, Powerful

See it if you're looking for a dynamic play set in 16th century England, but takes a very relevant look at female oppression, empowerment & comradery

Don’t see it if you can't keep track of over 12 characters on stage that aren't fully fleshed out, or don't care for totally unnecessary postmodern touches.

More information about The Welkin

One of TV and film’s most beloved actresses, Sandra Oh starred on Grey’s Anatomy (earning multiple Emmy Awards) and Killing Eve (for which she won a Golden Globe Award). For that latter show, in 2018, Oh became the first actress of Asian descent to be nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She has also been seen in The Princess Diaries, The Chair, Rabbit Hole, and more.

However, while highly regarded in Hollywood, Oh is no stranger to the stage: she has appeared off Broadway before, performing at The Public Theater, and has also acted at La Jolla Playhouse in California. Oh is known for her depictions of strong, singular women, and this play will be no different: The Welkin features a larger cast, just one man and over a dozen women contending with collective morality in 1759 but in surprisingly contemporary ways.

What to watch for

  • In addition to being a Tony nominee, playwright Lucy Kirkwood is a winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, one of the world’s top playwriting prizes given to women. With The Welkin, she makes her highly-anticipated off-Broadway debut.
  • Sandra Oh is the starriest name in the cast, but it is also an ensemble of theatre mainstays, including Ann Harada (Avenue Q), Nadine Malouf (Grief Hotel), and Emily Cass McDonnell (The Thin Place).
  • The design team is equally accomplished: the scenic team dots is a first-time Tony Award nominee this year, and costume designer Kaye Voyce is an Obie winner with dozens of off-Broadway credits.
  • Atlantic Theater Company is known for its groundbreaking work that often transfers to Broadway or tours the country. Some memorable hits include Spring Awakening, Kimberly Akimbo, and, most recently, Days of Wine and Roses.
