Atmospheric gothic tale reveals, Deep secrets black family in 1936 small town ga

See it if riveting; using tropes horror story, shows how source of our ghost stories is often fear&shame, how religion&superstition overlap; eerie end

Don’t see it if some unnecessary subplots & cheesy horror effects; takes itself 2 seriously/would benefit from campy humor

Thought-provoking, Intense, Great staging, Great acting, Absorbing

See it if you want to see a horror play that is well-executed and actually frightening.

Don’t see it if religious trauma is a trigger or you aren’t a horror person.

More information about Covenant

Walker developed his play at multiple theatre companies and festivals leading up to this fully-staged production of Covenant off Broadway. They include the Fire This Time Festival, Access Theatre’s 4 Flights Up Festival, and Arizona Theatre Company's Digital Play Series.

The playwright now makes his Roundabout Theatre Company debut with Covenant in New York. The nonprofit organization presents the play as part of its Roundabout Underground series for new works by emerging playwrights. As part of the program, Roundabout will commission a future play by Walker.

What to watch for

  • Covenant was the inaugural recipient of Vineyard Theatre's Colman Domingo Award, which honors multi-talented Black male theatremakers, in 2019.
  • Tiffany Nichole Greene directs Covenant. She was the first resident director for the national tour of Hamilton, but much of her directing work is with world-premiere plays.
  • All five members of the Covenant cast make their Roundabout Theatre Company debuts with the show, and one, Jade Payton, makes her New York theatre debut.
  • A covenant is another word for an agreement, but it's often used in religious contexts to refer to a commitment between a god and their people.
