About CABARET at the Kit Kat Club on Broadway

Wilkommen. Bienvenue. Welcome. Life is beautiful at the Kit Kat Club, and you're invited to enter it at this award-winning production of Cabaret, starring 2024 Tony Award nominees Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin. Set an alert for Cabaret tickets on TodayTix, and discover the most Tony-nominated musical revival of the season.

Nearly 60 years after its 1960 premiere, Cabaret remains timeless. Now, see the musical as you never have before as the August Wilson Theatre completely transforms into the Kit Kat Club in 1930 Berlin. There, writer Cliff Bradshaw witnesses how the hedonistic lives of its Emcee, headliner Sally Bowles, and more crash headfirst into the rise of Nazism.

Director Rebecca Frecknall's production, which won seven Olivier Awards in London including Best Musical Revival, retains all of Kander and Ebb's most iconic songs, like "Mein Herr," "Maybe This Time," and the riveting title track. Life is a cabaret, old chum, and it's time to experience it!

Slow, Great staging, Great singing, Exquisite

See it if into the OG version, not the movie. Creative staging, great direction. Rankin is fine, letting Redmayne and Neuwirth steal the show.

Don’t see it if well... sticking to the OG means a few slow scenes, but the audience is embracing this production enthusiastically.

Edgy, Thought-provoking, Relevant, Great singing, Great staging

See it if You haven’t seen the Alan Cummings revival, this is almost as good. The full takeover of the theatre as the club is phenomenal. A+ staging!

Don’t see it if You’re on a budget. Tickets are unnecessarily expensive. Thankfully I was taken by a friend. It was a grand experience. Not worth the price.

More information about CABARET at the Kit Kat Club on Broadway

Cabaret premiered on Broadway in 1966 and nearly swept that year's Tony Awards, taking home eight awards, including Best Musical, out of 11 nominations. Kander and Ebb won Best Composer And Lyricist (now Best Original Score), and theatre icon Harold Prince won for direction. Joel Grey, who won for playing the Emcee, went on to win an Oscar for reprising the role in the 1972 film opposite Liza Minnelli.

Since the premiere of Cabaret in New York, the musical returned to Broadway three more times: in 1987, 1998, and 2014. The 2024 revival premiered in London in 2021, where it still runs today. Among its seven Oliviers were Best Direction for Frecknall and Best Actor and Actress for Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley, who starred as the Emcee and Sally, respectively.

What to watch for

  • Be sure to arrive early! The production immerses audiences in the Kit Kat Club with pre-show entertainment in the lobby and the theatre, and by decorating every inch of the venue to look like the club. You'll want time to explore it all!
  • Tom Scutt is not only the scenic and costume designer — common creative jobs on Broadway — but also the club designer, a unique role. He oversees the total transformation of the modern-day New York theatre into the 20th-century Berlin cabaret, on and off the stage.
  • Rebecca Frecknall makes her Broadway debut with Cabaret in New York. What a way to start a Broadway career, with a multi-award-winning revival!
  • Talk about a full-circle moment! Gayle Rankin made her Broadway debut with the last revival of Cabaret in 2014. She played Fraulein Kost, Fritzie, and a member of the onstage band.
  • Bookwriter Joe Masteroff based the Cabaret musical on John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera, in turn based on Charles Isherwood's semi-autobiographical book Goodbye to Berlin. The writer Cliff is a stand-in for the author.
  • The character of Sally Bowles is based on Jean Ross, a real-life war journalist and activist whom Isherwood met while she was performing as a cabaret singer in Berlin.
