About Doubt on Broadway

There's no doubt about it — this show is unmissable. See Oscar nominee Amy Ryan and Tony winner Liev Schreiber are "electric" (Entertainment Weekly) in the first Broadway revival of Doubt: A Parable, which was named a New York Times Critic's Pick, before April 21.

Nearly 20 years after its premiere, John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer- and Tony-winning drama is still revered by audiences and critics alike. When a stern principal at an all-boys' school suspects a priest of inappropriate conduct, are her fears founded? Or is she just projecting her own doubt and mistrust of the world? And what does she risk if she's wrong either way?

Attend this starry, searing play and decide for yourself. See why Entertainment Weekly raves, “Doubt makes every single second count. It will stick with you long past the 90-minute runtime.”

Simply a terrific play

See it if you want a great play in every way … fantastic writing, acting and set design. A very good production.

Don’t see it if you are not in the mood for a good, serious play. If that’s the case, maybe see a light hearted comedy or musical… See it another day.

Thought-provoking, Great writing, Great staging, Great acting, Must see

See it if Set in 1964, this mesmerizing drama is abt Sister Aloysius,a BX principal (a superb Amy Ryan)who suspects a priest(equally talented Liev S)*

Don’t see it if You need every element explained, then stay clear of this one. Remember this is "doubt"& most importantly, "a parable."

More information about Doubt on Broadway

Doubt: A Parable mainly centers on the conflict between Sister Aloysius, the principal of a fictional Bronx Catholic school, and Father Flynn, one of the schoolteachers and a priest whom she suspects of unseemly relations with one of the boys.

Doubt premiered with Manhattan Theatre Club off Broadway in 2004 before transferring to Broadway the next year. The production starred Cherry Jones and Brían F. O'Byrne, and its four Tony Awards included Best Play and an acting win for Jones.

This time around, Amy Ryan and Liev Schreiber take on the roles of Aloysius and Flynn. Ryan is best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Gone Baby Gone, Tony-nominated performances in A Streetcar Named Desire and Uncle Vanya, and fan-favorite turns on The Office, Only Murders in the Building, and Birdman. Schreiber is best known for his Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated performance in the title role of Ray Donovan and his Tony-winning performance in Glengarry Glen Ross.

What to watch for

  • It's the season of Shanley! Two of his plays are going up off Broadway alongside Doubt on Broadway: a revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea starring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott, and the world premiere of Brooklyn Laundry, which Shanley also directs.
  • Shanley based the character of Sister James, a young nun and teacher at the school in Doubt, on one of his elementary school teachers.
  • Catholic school at large was a part of Shanley's own upbringing. In the program notes for Doubt's Broadway premiere, he quipped that he was "thrown out of St. Helena's kindergarten, banned from St. Anthony's hot lunch program and expelled from Cardinal Spellman High School."
  • Doubt received a 2008 film adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
  • A parable is a short story meant to teach a lesson. In the Catholic Bible, Jesus commonly tells parables to his followers.
