More information about Merry Me

Merry Me is inspired by the restoration comedy, or comedy of manners, genre. These plays, dating back to the 17th century, subvert social norms, standards, and morals — often, they involve upper-class or sophisticated people getting into scandalous situations.

This play is a departure from Jung's last Off-Broadway work, Wolf Play, a drama about adoption that won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and also earned Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Award nominations. Both Wolf Play and Merry Me center queer relationships; this is a theme throughout Jung's work.

Directing is Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet), known for her more than three dozen Broadway and Off-Broadway productions like Suffs, Harry Clarke, and Soft Power. She won the 2019 Obie Award for Sustained Excellence in Direction.

What to Watch For

  • Two actors from Wolf Play off Broadway, Nicole Villamil and Esco Jouléy, are also in Merry Me.
  • Jung and Silverman have worked together before. Silverman directed Jung's Wild Goose Dreams at The Public Theater in 2018.
  • Merry Me isn't Jung's first time providing a fresh take on classical theatre themes. She premiered an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet in spring 2023.
  • Merry Me kicks off the first New York Theatre Workshop season under the leadership of Patricia McGregor, who is also currently directing The Refuge Plays, a co-production of NYTW and Roundabout Theatre Company.
  • New York Theatre Workshop was the launchpad for now-famous, award-winning works like Rent and Hadestown.
