More information about I Can Get It For You Wholesale

I Can Get It For You Wholesale began as a 1937 novel by Weidman, and it was turned into a film before becoming a musical. The Broadway production debuted in 1962 and ran for 300 performances. The show has rarely appeared in New York since, though — the last major production was in 1991, presented by the American Jewish Theatre and starring Evan Pappas and Carolee Carmello.

Classic Stage Company now presents I Can Get It For You Wholesale off Broadway, with a cast of stage favorites. Fontana is known for his Tony-winning lead performance in the Tootsie musical, Lester earned a 2023 Tony nomination for her breakout Into the Woods performance, and Kuhn is a four-time nominee for Fun Home, She Loves Me, Chess, and Les Misérables.

What to watch for

  • The 1962 Broadway premiere of I Can Get It For You Wholesale marked the debut of a then-unknown Barbra Streisand as Miss Marmelstein.
  • It's a family affair! Jerome Weidman wrote the musical's book, and his son John Weidman revised it for this production.
  • The original Wholesale novel was Jerome Weidman's first full-length book.
  • In the 1951 film, the main character was changed to fashion designer Harriet Boyd, instead of businessman Harry Bogen, so Susan Hayward could star.
  • Young men's ambition-to-a-fault is a popular theme of classic musicals. Other famous examples include J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and the title character in Pal Joey (which is getting a limited-run Encores! revival during Wholesale's run).
