About Days of Wine and Roses on Broadway

Raise a glass! Tony winner Kelli O'Hara (The King and I) and Tony nominee Brian d'Arcy James (Something Rotten!) star in Days of Wine and Roses, the latest new musical from the writers of The Light in the Piazza. Days of Wine and Roses is on Broadway for eight more weeks only.

When two celebrated Broadway veterans team up with the writers of one of the dreamiest musicals of this century, it’s an unmissable event. Like the bittersweet The Light in the Piazza, which won the Tony Award for Best Original Score, Days of Wine and Roses shows the highs and lows of love.

Based on a now-classic film, the stage adaptation promises a taste of a bygone New York and unforgettable performances from two stage greats. Brian d'Arcy James and Kelli O’Hara will stir the soul — and bring the tears — as Joe and Kirsten, a couple whose sparkling romance gets turned upside down by alcoholism.

Can they rebuild their family and save their love? Or will the bottle always get in the way? Find out by spending one of your days at this poignant new musical. Tickets to Days of Wine and Roses on Broadway are on TodayTix now.

More information about Days of Wine and Roses on Broadway

Before the Days of Wine and Roses musical premiered off Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company in 2023, its story began as a 1958 teleplay and 1962 film. The 1962 film starred Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick, both of whom earned Oscar nominations. The art direction and costume design also received nods, and the title theme won the top prize for Best Song.

The musical adaptation features new songs by Adam Guettel and a book by Craig Lucas, adapted from JP Miller's screenplay. Days of Wine and Roses is the duo's first musical collaboration since The Light in the Piazza in 2003, which earned six Tony Awards, including Best Original Score. The show got 11 total nominations, including Best Musical.

Directing Days of Wine and Roses is Michael Greif, who's known for staging musicals like Rent and Dear Evan Hansen. He directs two musical veterans in the lead roles: O’Hara is a Tony winner for The King and I and a nominee for The Bridges of Madison County, South Pacific, The Pajama Game, and Kiss Me, Kate. James is a three-time nominee for Shrek, Sweet Smell of Success, and Something Rotten!, and he just starred in Into the Woods on Broadway.

What to watch for

  • Days of Wine and Roses got its title from an 1896 poem written in Latin. A portion of the poem translates to, "They are not long, the days of wine and roses: / Out of a misty dream / Our path emerges for a while, then closes / Within a dream."
  • The Days of Wine and Roses teleplay inspired Bill Withers to write "Ain't No Sunshine," one of his greatest hits.
  • O'Hara collaborated with Lucas and Guettel before, earning a Best Featured Actress Tony nomination for The Light in the Piazza.
  • Coincidentally, Days of Wine and Roses and The Light in the Piazza are both based on films that came out in 1962.
  • Lucas and Guettel had a moment off Broadway in 2023. New York City Center staged a limited-run revival of The Light in the Piazza from June 21-25, closing the same day as Days of Wine and Roses off Broadway did.
