Clever, Ambitious, Great acting, Great staging, Intelligent

See it if you want to see the talent of Jefferson Mays on stage for 90 minutes in a superb performance of multiple characters, enunciated perfectly.

Don’t see it if you expect to see Mays clearly, as it is a dark stage to make the excellent projections work. It's one actor telling/acting the entire story

Dark, Great acting, Entertaining, Clever

See it if You are a fan of Jefferson Mays, he is terrific. Also go if you love Dickens. Special effects are great too.

Don’t see it if It’s dark, both literally and figuratively. Very hard to see from the upper mezzanine. Would be better in a smaller venue.

Great staging, Refreshing, Great acting, Clever, Ambitious

See it if you’re interested in a one-person version of the classic material that is anything but bare bones. Also if you love intricate set design.

Don’t see it if you aren’t interested in holiday-related plays or if spooky stories aren’t for you.

More information about A Christmas Carol on Broadway

You may have seen many productions of A Christmas Carol, but Jefferson Mays puts a new spin on the classic Charles Dickens tale in this one-man version. Get A Christmas Carol tickets on TodayTix.

This A Christmas Carol play sees the Tony-winning actor perform every role in the story, large and tiny — from Ebenezer Scrooge all the way down to, according to a New York Times review, "an indignant potato." As he seamlessly shifts between roles, Mays brings fresh theatre magic to the already otherworldly tale of three ghosts — Christmas Past, Present, and Future — who visit Scrooge on Christmas Eve and convince him to change his greedy, uncaring ways.

Dickens first published A Christmas Carol in 1843, and he soon took it on "reading tours." For paying audience members, he'd voice and act out all the characters, somewhat similarly to what Mays is doing in A Christmas Carol on Broadway. With such theatrical origins, it's no wonder that in the past few centuries, A Christmas Carol has been adapted into countless full-fledged stage shows, plus movies, books, and more.

Mays premiered his version in 2018 at Los Angeles's Geffen Playhouse. The only other production of A Christmas Carol in New York, besides the 2022 Broadway production, was presented virtually in 2020 amid the pandemic. He performed the show in an empty Washington Heights theatre, where it was filmed for streaming.

What to Watch For

  • Mays has made a successful career of taking on multiple roles at once on stage. He is a Tony winner for playing every character in the solo show I Am My Own Wife, and for playing eight characters in A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.
  • Another one-man Christmas Carol show, titled One Christmas Carol and written by Douglas Baker, has received multiple Off-Broadway and nationwide productions.
  • While Mays's A Christmas Carol is on Broadway this season, a Sherlock Holmes/Christmas Carol mashup show titled A Sherlock Carol is playing off Broadway.
  • Mays is having a busy year. Since 2021, he has starred as Mayor Shinn in The Music Man, and he starts A Christmas Carol performances only a few weeks after leaving that show.
