Both Bioh and White are making Broadway debuts with Jaja's African Hair Braiding. Bioh, who is also an actor, performed in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in 2014, but this play marks her Broadway writing debut. All her previous plays have debuted off Broadway and beyond: the multi-award-winning School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, the rom-com Nollywood Dreams, and the Shakespeare adaptation Merry Wives.
White is best known for her Obie Award-winning direction of Our Dear Dead Drug Lord off Broadway in 2019, and for other shows including the world premiere of Aleshea Harris's Pulitzer-nominated On Sugarland.
What to Watch For
- Bioh set another one of her plays, Merry Wives, amid an African diasporic community in Harlem. A key event in that show takes place while a character is at a Senegalese braiding salon.
- Bioh doesn't just write plays — she inspires them, too. Fellow playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins wrote a role in his play An Octoroon specifically for her to play.
- Bioh's plays are mostly comedic because she wants to portray the joy, not suffering, of African communities. She is inspired by the personalities and lives of her Ghanaian relatives.
- She's keeping busy! Bioh wrote the book for a new musical, Goddess, which premiered in California and is rumored to be aiming for Broadway. Saheem Ali, who directed Bioh's Merry Wives, conceived the musical.
