About Gabriel Byrne: Walking with Ghosts on Broadway

Gabriel Byrne on stage. In his own words.

By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Walking with Ghosts is a delightful portrait of the people and landscapes that ultimately shape our destinies. A Landmark production, it comes to Broadway direct from wildly successful runs in London’s West End; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Dublin, Ireland.

As a young boy growing up on the outskirts of Dublin, the stage and screen legend sought refuge in a world of imagination among the fields and hills near his home, at the edge of a rapidly encroaching city. Moving between sensual recollection of childhood in a now almost vanished Ireland and commentary on stardom, the actor-writer returns to Broadway to reflect on a life’s journey.

Adapted from his best-selling memoir of the same name and directed by Emmy Award® winner Lonny Price, Walking with Ghosts is written and performed by Gabriel Byrne (Hereditary, HBO’s In Treatment).

More information about Gabriel Byrne: Walking with Ghosts on Broadway

Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner Gabriel Byrne returns to the Broadway stage with Walking With Ghosts, his autobiographical solo show. Get Walking With Ghosts tickets on TodayTix.

Based on his memoir of the same name, Walking With Ghosts sees Byrne recount the bygone events and memories of his life that have shaped his life's path. He shares his childhood in Dublin, Ireland, and how the culture of that city as he knew it then is all but long gone. He talks about his roundabout road to fame and his early days as an actor, observing the greats from the sidelines. He also shares his own disinterest in fame, as much as he loves acting. Overall, Walking With Ghosts captures the richness of one man's 70-plus years of life experiences, and how his world — and the wider world — have changed.

Fittingly, the Walking With Ghosts play had its world premiere in Dublin before going on to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, London's West End, and now Broadway. Three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee Lonny Price directs; his last Broadway outing was 2017's Sunset Boulevard revival.

Byrne, too, is making a return to Broadway after some years; he last performed in Long Day's Journey into Night in 2016. That show and 2000's A Moon for the Misbegotten earned him Tony nominations, and he also performed in A Touch of the Poet in 2005. Byrne is best known as a screen actor, however, whose 80-plus film credits include Excalibur, The Usual Suspects, and The Miller's Crossing. His role as Paul Weston on the TV show In Treatment earned him a Golden Globe win and three Emmy nominations.

What to Watch For

  • The "ghosts" of the title refer to memories of people, places, and experiences that linger with him long after they're gone.
  • Before becoming an actor, Byrne almost entered the priesthood, and then became a plumber! He talks about both these experiences in Walking With Ghosts.
  • The Walking With Ghosts book came out in November 2020, amid the pandemic, and received rave reviews.
  • Though Walking With Ghosts is not a comedy show, Byrne includes plenty of witty and laugh-out-loud jokes in his emotional story.
  • Byrne mentions, and impersonates, multiple different figures during Walking With Ghosts, ranging from his family members to fellow Hollywood stars like Richard Burton.
