About Infinite Life

Five women in Northern California sit outside on chaise lounges and philosophize. A surprisingly funny inquiry into the complexity of suffering, and what it means to desire in a body that’s failing you.

Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker returns to New York with her latest world-premiere play, Infinite Life — but it's not on for an infinite amount of time. Set an alert for Infinite Life tickets on TodayTix now.

Infinite Life is a play about five aging northern California women. They sit on chaises and philosophize about how to navigate and satisfy desire when your body is failing you, and how not doing so is its own kind of suffering.

Neither Baker nor Infinite Life's director, James Macdonald, are strangers to the Off-Broadway scene. Baker is a three-time Obie Award winner for her plays Circle Mirror Transformation, The Aliens, and The Flick; that one won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize.

Macdonald has had a 30-plus-year career in artistic direction, heading up London's Royal Court Theatre for 15 years and heading up dozens of acclaimed plays in London and New York. His last credit with Atlantic Theater Company, which produces Infinite Life Infinite Life in New York, was Caryl Churchill's Cloud 9 in 2015.

What to Watch For

  • Director James Macdonald previously staged two of Baker's other plays, Circle Mirror Transformation and John, before returning for The Flick off Broadway.
  • Baker regularly writes about characters having revelatory experiences in mundane situations. The Flick, for example, centers on three movie theatre employees who find unexpected connection while performing their cleanup duties.
  • Cast member Marylouise Burke starred in the world premiere of Kimberly Akimbo, a play (and now a Tony-winning musical) about a teenage girl navigating life in an abnormally aging body.
  • In 2022, another cast member, Mia Katigbak, performed in Out of Time, a play composed of five monologues about aging as an Asian American person.
  • Baker is married to Nico Baumbach, brother of acclaimed filmmaker Noah Baumbach.
