Lempicka covers decades of political and personal strife for the title character. Amid the backdrop of the Russian Revolution, which sends her and her husband fleeing from Poland to Paris, she leaves her former life of luxury behind but finds a new social scene to join — thanks to one of the models Lempicka paints and soon falls for.

Before the premiere of Lempicka on Broadway, the show debuted in 2018 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. In 2022, Lempicka had a pre-Broadway run at La Jolla Playhouse.

The San Diego Union-Tribune praised the show for its stunning production and breathtaking musical performances. "In life, Lempicka may not have been an easy person to love, but on the musical stage, she's at least easier to understand and appreciate," the publication's critic wrote.

That's thanks to Lempicka's creative team. Creators Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould make their Broadway debuts with the show alongside veteran director Rachel Chavkin, a Tony winner for Hadestown.

What to watch for

• Many people covet Lempicka's work. One of her paintings, Portrait de Marjorie Ferry, sold for £16,280,000. Among her famous collectors is Barbra Streisand!
• Lempicka boasts elaborate projections to set the scene. These include include images of Lempicka's paintings, photographs of 1920s Paris, and newsreels from the wars that take place during the show.
• The Lempicka musical compares history to today. As the New York Times review noted, "Lempicka draws implicit parallels between the divided world of today and an earlier era of increasing, frightening, intolerance."
• Matt Gould told the LA Times of the music in the show, which combines a variety of influences including pop and rock, "She [Lempicka] was always trying to create something new. It only felt right to do the same thing musically."
