Etheridge is known for her raspy, smoky voice and for fusing rock, pop, and folk sounds in her music. Her career took off in 1988, when she released her self-titled debut album. Four years later, she won her first Grammy Award for the song "Ain't It Heavy," and as of 2023, she has 15 total Grammy nominations. She's also an Oscar winner for writing and performing the song "I Need to Wake Up" from the documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

  • My Window contains additional material by Linda Wallem-Etheridge, the co-creator and showrunner of Nurse Jackie — and Melissa Etheridge's wife!
  • The show is named for "Come to My Window," one of Etheridge's best-known songs and the one that earned the singer her second Grammy Award.
  • Etheridge is an international sensation — she's won American and Canadian music awards and been nominated for the German ECHO Award.
  • Etheridge was on Broadway once before: She did a six-day guest run as St. Jimmy in American Idiot in 2011.
  • Bruce Springsteen put on a 2017 Broadway solo show that returned in 2021, in which he also sang his hits while reflecting on his life. Etheridge has said the success of Springsteen on Broadway inspired her to create My Window.
