In her much-anticipated one-woman show, Kate Berlant explores the events of her life that have brought her to this moment. Embodying many characters in this tour de force performance, she expertly morphs before our eyes and exposes a truth she has, until now, kept hidden.
Kate Berlant makes her long-awaited return to the NYC stage with Kate, her most personal stand-up show yet. Set an alert for Kate tickets on TodayTix.
Kate is a stand-up comedy show about, well, Kate Berlant. She inhabits numerous characters besides herself and shares stories about how she got to where she is in life now. All these stories are leading up to a revelation that she's never shared before.
Berlant has been deliberately tight-lipped about her show, revealing no other details. She did, however, release a statement that says, "All my previous work has been a pale shadow, a humiliation, an impotent suggestion always gesturing toward, yet never quite arriving… until now. I can’t wait to welcome you into my home, which is the theatre. Although I haven’t been home in a long time, it feels good to be back and I’m so grateful they kept the lights on for me. Although it is forbidden to take your shoes off in my home, I hope you will still allow yourself to shed a layer — to become vulnerable and receptive to the possibility of transformation."
Berlant has performed stand-up since she was an undergraduate student at New York University; her first gig was an open-mic night in a basement there. Initial gigs like that one eventually led her to perform at comedy festivals worldwide, in cities like Montreal, Edinburgh, and New York. In recent years, Berlant has taken her comedy talents to the screen, landing scene-stealing roles in Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You and the HBO show The Other Two. She has also acted in Search Party and High Maintenance, and done voice acting on BoJack Horseman.
She teams up with an equally acclaimed comedian for Kate in New York: Emmy and Grammy Award winner Bo Burnham directs. His streamed musical comedy special Inside was an instant critical and popular success in 2021, and its song "All Eyes on Me" earned the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media. He's a multi-hyphenate, having written and performed three other stand-up specials, directed and produced shows for other comedians including Jerrod Carmichael and Chris Rock, and directing and writing the indie movie Eighth Grade. Like Berlant, he's also an actor who's appeared on screen in Promising Young Woman, The Big Sick, and Parks and Recreation.
