About Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier

A dream cast assembles for Strauss’s grand Viennese comedy. Soprano Lise Davidsen is the aging Marschallin, opposite mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as her lover Octavian and soprano Erin Morley as Sophie, the beautiful younger woman who steals his heart. Bass Günther Groissböck returns as the churlish Baron Ochs, and Markus Brück is Sophie’s wealthy father, Faninal. Maestro Simone Young takes the Met podium to oversee Robert Carsen’s fin-de-siècle staging.

World premiere: Court Opera, Dresden, 1911. Set in an idealized Vienna of the past, Strauss’s most popular opera concerns a wise woman of the world who is involved with a much younger lover but ultimately forced to accept the laws of time, giving him up to a pretty young heiress. Hofmannsthal’s fascinating libretto deftly combines comedy, dreamy nostalgic fantasy, genuine human drama, and light but striking touches of philosophy and social commentary. Strauss’s magnificent score, likewise, works on several levels, combining the refinement of Mozart with the epic grandeur of Wagner.

Romantic, Funny, Great singing, Great acting, Delightful

See it if you like light operas devoid of tragedy and killing. Hey are many laughs with excellent singing, a huge cast and a well-conducted orchestra

Don’t see it if you want a serious production or you would have difficulty spending nearly 5 hours in the theater (2 - 30 minute intermissions).

Great staging, Funny, Entertaining, Enchanting, Absorbing

See it if Wonderful humor, great staging and music. Different than most operas... woman as a man as a woman.

Don’t see it if If you prefer tragedy in opera over comedy. Long with two intermissions.

Enchanting, Delightful, Masterful, Hilarious, Great staging

See it if Gorgeous music (because Strauss), lovely sets, a silly/fun story (w/a woman playing a man playing a woman & somehow making it work).

Don’t see it if It's got 2 intermissions, so you're committing 4½ hours of your life to this. I found it worth it but I also wish I'd caught a matinee.

Profound, Great singing, Great acting, Clever, Absorbing

See it if you want to see something that might be unsettling, with strong scenes and dialogues that are often hard.

Don’t see it if you want to see a cute romantic opera. It definitely is not like that. It has some very sexy scenes.
