About Almost Famous on Broadway

It's all happening... Almost Famous, the new musical written by Cameron Crowe and based on his beloved film, with music and lyrics by Tom Kitt, comes to Broadway this fall.

The year is 1973 and it’s all happening. Led Zeppelin is king, Richard Nixon is President, and idealistic 15-year-old William Miller is an aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, William is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide. Almost Famous is about a young man finding his place in the world and the indelible characters he meets along the way.

"Almost Famous is destined to conquer Broadway," raves the Los Angeles Times. "It's an entrancing tapestry of sound — the chaotic, communal spirit of ’70s rock distilled in a musical.” Written by Academy Award winner Cameron Crowe based on his beloved film, and featuring music and lyrics by Tony® and Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt, Almost Famous is a hilarious and heartfelt celebration of community, family, fandom and the power of music.

The Almost Famous musical has the same plot as the Oscar-winning film. Fifteen-year-old William Miller, an aspiring rock journalist, is about to get his big break when Rolling Stone magazine sends him on tour with the fictional band Stillwater. He's warned not to befriend his subjects but, overwhelmed by the glamour and energy of the rock scene, gets easily swept up into the band's inner circle — and even falls for Penny Lane, Stillwater's charismatic lead groupie.

The Almost Famous movie was an instant hit when it came out in 2000. After getting critical acclaim, it earned the Golden Globes for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The starry cast included Patrick Fugit, Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand (who got an Oscar nomination for playing William's mother), and Kate Hudson (a Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee for playing Penny Lane).

The movie was a love letter to the 1970s heyday of rock and roll, and the musical is no different, with all the film's iconic lines, looks, and 70s sound intact. However, the musical features all-original songs by Tom Kitt, the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning composer of Next To Normal, If/Then, and Flying Over Sunset. He's teamed up with Crowe, who adapted his screenplay into the show's book.

Before the debut of Almost Famous in New York, the show had its world premiere at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in 2019, receiving rave reviews.

What to Watch For

  • The story of Almost Famous is inspired by Crowe's own experiences as a teenage rock journalist. It's only fitting that he adapted his own movie for the stage — who could tell his story better?
  • Crowe also wrote the lyrics for the Almost Famous musical. For the movie, he wrote the lyrics to three of Stillwater's songs, including Fever Dog, which is also included in the musical. (Nancy Wilson of Heart wrote the music.)
  • Costume designer David Zinn referenced both the movie's looks and photos from the 1970s — of iconic rockers like Glenn Frey, Stevie Nicks, and Kris Kristofferson, and of groupies — to create the stage costumes for Almost Famous. Some of the costume pieces are actual vintage clothing, and some are handmade from Etsy!
  • Though Almost Famous isn't a jukebox musical, it does include snippets of over a dozen iconic rock songs. The scene where the characters sing Elton John's Tiny Dancer on a tour bus, for example, is part of the show.
  • Neal Preston, a longtime friend of Crowe's, shot photos of the Almost Famous cast that are used in the production. Preston is a rock photographer known for his photos of bands like Queen and Led Zeppelin, and singers like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Madonna, and Michael Jackson.
  • Stillwater, the fictional band in Almost Famous, shares its name with a real rock band. The characters in the film and musical aren't based on the real band's members, but the movie's creators had to pay Stillwater to use their name.
