Tell Me More

Get ready for for a madcap voyage on the high seas — the new musical Titanique is docking at NYC's Asylum Theatre this summer. Get Titanique tickets on TodayTix.

Titanique is a musical that mashes up the story of the Oscar-winning Titanic film with the musical catalogue of Céline Dion, who sang the film's most famous song, "My Heart Will Go On." Dion herself (okay, an actor playing her) is the main character of Titanique, in which she crashes a tour group at a Titanic museum to tell them the real story about what happened to Jack and Rose — and it's not how Hollywood tells it. She uses her songs to steer the story, incorporating hits like "All By Myself" and "To Love You More."

The real-life Titanic voyage and the Titanic film were tragic, but Titanique is firmly a comedic spoof. The show was most recently presented as a concert called the Maiden Voyage, performed at New York's Le Poisson Rouge lounge and streamed to virtual audiences in 2021. Before that, the musical had pop-up engagements in New York and Los Angeles, earning a BroadwayWorld Cabaret Award in 2019. The 2022 run of Titanique in New York marks its first fully staged production.

What to Watch For

  • The 1997 Titanic movie, which Titanique takes inspiration from, won 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture. It was also the first film in history to gross over $1 billion from its run in movie theatres.
  • There's little Tye Blue could do to love Titanique more. Besides directing the show, Blue also co-wrote it with Marla Mindelle and Constantine Rousouli.
  • You can actually see Blue's co-authors on stage, too! Mindelle plays Céline Dion in Titanique, and Rousouli plays Jack, the role made famous on screen by Leonardo DiCaprio in 1997.
  • There are plenty of 1990s pop culture references and historical references in Titanique. Some of these come in the form of the characters themselves — for example, the actor Victor Garber is a character; he played shipbuilder Thomas Andrews in the 1997 movie. Another character is famed Titanic survivor Molly Brown, who has a musical of her own.
  • Speaking of which, Titanique isn't the only musical that incorporates the Titanic sinking. Meredith Willson wrote The Unsinkable Molly Brown in 1960, and a new version just played off Broadway in 2020 with Fun Home's Beth Malone in the title role. There's also the 1997 musical Titanic (the film premiered later that year by coincidence), a historical drama that won five Tony Awards including Best Musical.
