More information about Primary Trust

Roundabout Theatre Company continues its Off-Broadway season with Primary Trust, Eboni Booth's new play about old friends and new starts. Set an alert for Primary Trust tickets on TodayTix.

The main character of the Primary Trust play is Kenneth. The 36-year-old works at a bookstore by day and haunts his local tiki bar, sipping mai tais, by night. That is, until he's laid off. But what seems like an ending might actually be a new beginning. Encouraged by a quirky waiter, he finally faces a world he's avoided for a long time, and his life transforms.

Eboni Booth makes her Roundabout playwriting debut with the world premiere of Primary Trust. Her other best-known Off-Broadway work is Paris, a working-class drama about underpaid employees at a big-box store. That show premiered at Atlantic Theater Company in 2020 and marked Booth's Off-Broadway writing debut.

Director Knud Adams is known for directing world premieres — in 2022, he directed English, which won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, and I'm Revolting at Atlantic Theater Company.

What to Watch For

  • "Primary trust" is a law term that means the main legal agreement someone makes to allow others to claim their belongings.
  • Primary Trust marks Booth and Adams's second collaboration following Paris.
  • Booth does it all! She's also a performer, having acted in TV shows like Daredevil and The Good Fight, and Off-Broadway shows like Dance Nation and After the Blast.
  • William Jackson Harper, who stars in Primary Trust off Broadway, is best known as Chidi Anagonye on The Good Place. He got an Emmy nomination for the role!
  • April Matthis, the play's other star, has been busy. She starred in Help in spring 2022, and in the fall she made her Broadway debut in The Piano Lesson and co-wrote part of Baldwin & Buckley at Cambridge at The Public Theater.
