In the Wet Brain play, a family in a crumbling Arizona home is crumbling themselves as they deal with their patriarch's late-stage alcoholism. But this is no ordinary family drama. The patriarch is repeatedly abducted by aliens, forcing the family to travel to space to figure out how to finally cope with the situation and achieve closure. Caswell incorporates humor, catharsis, and the supernatural into his exploration of how people heal from tragedy.

Wet Brain in New York is Caswell's first Off-Broadway show. He's teamed up with Dustin Wills, a veteran director who's staged not only multiple plays, but operas as well. His productions have appeared at institutions like The Public Theater, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and more.

What to Watch For

  • The play takes its title from a type of brain damage that people can develop from drinking too much alcohol over a long period of time.
  • Director Dustin Wills is doing double duty off Broadway this season, having won a Lucille Lortel Award for directing Wolf Play this spring.
  • Rather than Caswell writing a script and the directors and designers basing their work off it, Caswell, Wills, and the design team all met for a week before rehearsals to develop and adjust all their work at the same time, so the script informed the design and direction and vice versa.
  • Wet Brain is a co-production between Playwrights Horizons and MCC Theater, but the show is being performed on Playwrights Horizons's stage.
  • As Caswell described in a statement, the play isn't totally unnatural sci-fi, but "realism interjected by moments of fantastical departure." He wanted to "play with the notion that what goes unseen is often scariest.”
