More information about The Kite Runner on Broadway
After playing in California and in London, Matthew Spangler's stage adaptation of The Kite Runner premieres on the Broadway stage in summer 2022. Get The Kite Runner tickets on TodayTix.
Based on Khaled Hosseini's bestselling novel, The Kite Runner is a play that begins with two childhood friends in Afghanistan: Amir, a Pashtun Afghan, and Hassan, a Hazara Afghan. Despite their different races, the two boys grow close through their shared love of kite-flying, and they find comfort and brotherhood in each other as their country teeters on the brink of conflict around them. They are happy, though, to have one worry-free day competing in a kite-flying tournament. However, a horrific event occurs that day and tears apart their friendship.
Years later, an adult Amir has moved out of Afghanistan, which has since erupted into full-on war, to the U.S. He and Hassan have not talked in years. But he learns of an opportunity to make amends, which requires him to make a dangerous trip back to his homeland.
The premiere of The Kite Runner on Broadway was preceded by a world premiere in San Jose, California in 2009 and two runs in London's West End in 2016 and 2017. Director Giles Croft helmed every one, and he returns once more to direct the Broadway production.

What to Watch For
- The Kite Runner only soared to the top of the literary charts a few years after its release. The book was released in 2003, but it didn't become popular until 2004, when it gained popularity in book clubs. It was another year until it hit the New York Times bestseller list, but once there, The Kite Runner stayed there for two years and has been well-known ever since.
- This stage show isn't the only adaptation of The Kite Runner. Two years before its premiere, in 2007, a film adaptation of the book came out (it's not related to the play), and there's also a Kite Runner graphic novel. Spangler's play was, however, the first stage adaptation of Hosseini's book.
- The Kite Runner isn't a musical, but it does feature an original score played on the tabla, a pair of hand drums that features in lots of Afghan folk and popular music. The score is by Jonathan Girling, and Salar Nader plays percussion live on stage.
- As you might expect from a show called The Kite Runner, kites feature heavily in the prop and set design (by Barney George). In the London production, images of Afghanistan and America were projected onto a giant kite in the background to set each scene.
- Lots of the leading actors in The Kite Runner are making their Broadway debuts. They include Amir Arison as Amir, Eric Sirakian as Hassan and Sohrab, Faran Tahir as Baba, Amir Malaklou as Assef, and more.
