In the Which Way to the Stage play, the year is 2015 and If/Then is playing on Broadway. Two longtime friends, Jeff and Judy (plus a bunch of tourists), are waiting outside the stage door, eagerly hoping to meet the show's star. They chat in the meantime, and the conversation that transpires changes their decades-long friendship for good.

Multi-hyphenate Ana Nogueira made her playwriting debut in 2016, when she premiered Empathitrax at HERE Arts Center in lower Manhattan. In 2019, MCC hosted a reading of an early version of Which Way to the Stage, which was set to get a full production the following year. However, the premiere of Which Way to the Stage off Broadway got delayed until now.

Which Way to the Stage follows Nollywood Dreams and Space Dogs in MCC's 2021-22 season, and precedes Donja R. Love's soft.

What to Watch For

  • Which Way to the Stage underwent multiple title changes before getting its current name. Before 2022, it was called Here She Is, Boys, a reference to the iconic song "Rose's Turn" from Gypsy. An even earlier version of the show (written pre-pandemic, ironically) was called Mask Only.
  • In the cast list of Which Way to the Stage, the celebrity that Jeff and Judy are waiting to meet is just called "an actress." In real life, Wicked and Frozen star Idina Menzel starred in If/Then.
  • Does the playwright's name sound familiar? If you're a Vampire Diaries fan, it might — Ana Nogueira played Penny Ares on the hit series.
  • History is happening in Manhattan! Not only is Nogueira a playwright and screen actress; she's a stage actress as well. She played the role of Eliza in an early workshop of Hamilton at Vassar College, well before the show became a smash hit.
  • The 2021-22 MCC Theater season is a family affair. A couple months before Nogueira's play began performances, her husband Nick Blaemire premiered his and Van Hughes's musical Space Dogs there. Both Blaemire and Nogueira are making their MCC debuts with their respective shows.
