About Madama Butterfly

Soprano Eleonora Buratto takes on the touchstone title role of the tragic geisha, following earlier Met successes as Norina in Don Pasquale and Liù in Turandot. Tenor Brian Jagde is the callous American naval officer who betrays her, alongside mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong as her devoted maid Suzuki and baritone David Bizic as the consul Sharpless. Alexander Soddy conducts Anthony Minghella’s evocative, ever-popular staging.

Absorbing, Intense, Great staging, Great singing, Delightful

See it if you would enjoy having Puccini's great music take you away from all current day thoughts to a time and a place where a sad story unfolds.

Don’t see it if you do not appreciate the gentle story development of this opera's pace or do not appreciate the culture and dress of this setting.

Great staging, Great singing, Exquisite, Enchanting, Ambitious

See it if you love opera and want to see cool staging and hear beautiful voices. Love the puppetry.

Don’t see it if you aren't into the operatic voices. The set is not elaborate but there is gorgeous imagery.

Must see, Profound, Great staging, Great singing, Absorbing

See it if U are a neophyte testing out if opera is your thing. This powerful, tragic, beautiful piece will make you fall in love with this form of art

Don’t see it if you are unable to put this opera in perspective (it was written in 1898) and get offended by its content.

Pretty much what opera is for, Epic, Leave at intermission & it has a happy ending!, Staging is minimal but very effective, Great singing

See it if You like opera even the tiniest amount. This is as good as opera gets. The staging is minimalist but in a way that REALLY works.

Don’t see it if I can't imagine a good reason not to see this, honestly.
