Fantasy and reality melt together in the Between the Lines musical, which shares a title with the favorite book of its protagonist, Delilah. The 17-year-old girl has trouble fitting in at her new school after moving cities, and she has trouble connecting with her overprotective single mother. So she finds solace in her copy of Between the Lines, a book about a dreamy prince in an imaginary land. Delilah treats the book like a diary of sorts, telling her worries and dreams to the prince when no one else will listen.
Everything changes when Prince Oliver comes alive and speaks back to Delilah one day. She gets the friend she's always wanted, but how much of their relationship is real?
The Between the Lines book was released in 2012 and became a #1 New York Times Bestseller and a Publishers Weekly Bestseller. Five years later, the musical adaptation first premiered at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, followed by a 2018 production at New York City's 92Y in 2018. Timothy Allen McDonald adapted Picoult and van Leer's work into a stage script, and Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson wrote music and lyrics.

What to Watch For
- Not only are Picoult and van Leer co-authors, but they’re also mother and daughter! Between the Lines was the first book they wrote together, and it was Picoult’s first young adult novel and van Leer’s first published novel. Now, it’s the basis for their first musical adaptation!
- Picoult is best known for her adult fiction, which includes books like My Sister’s Keeper, Nineteen Minutes, and The Tenth Circle, among more than 20 others. She received the 2003 New England Bookseller Award for fiction for all her work.
- Between the Lines is the first book in a duology; Picoult and van Leer later wrote and published Off the Page as its sequel. Musicals don’t often get sequels the way books do, but with the material out there, you never know!
- Between the Lines was a hit even before the show came off Broadway. The premiere production at Kansas City Repertory Theatre broke box office records for the venue!
- Between the Lines premieres at the Tony Kiser Theater, which is owned by Second Stage Theater. However, the musical is not a Second Stage production.
