About Baby

Starring Julia Murney (WICKED, THE WILD PARTY), three couples on a university campus deal with the painful, rewarding and agonizingly funny consequences of the universal experience of pregnancy and upcoming parenthood. There are the college students, barely at the beginning of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents, looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college... when a night of unexpected passion lands them back where they started. Featuring an updated book to reflect today's society with the same beloved score. Cast includes Johnny Link (R&&H's CINDERELLA - tour), Jamila Sabares-Klemm (Chicago's HAMILTON), Elizabeth Flemming (OOTB's YOU'RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN), Robert H. Fowler (THE PRODUCERS, BEAUTY & THE BEAST), Danielle Summons (Nat'l Tours - BEAUTIFUL, LES MIS), Jorge Donoso (OOTB's CHARLIE BROWN), Marisa Kirby (OOTB's BABY), Jewell Noel (Weathervane Theatre's THE MOUNTAINTOP).

More information about Baby

Out of the Box Theatrics’s new production of Baby Off-Broadway first premiered in 2019 and is back for a return engagement, now starring Julia Murney as Arlene. Get Baby tickets on TodayTix now.

Baby is a musical that follows three couples anticipating parenthood — sometimes anxiously, sometimes eagerly, and often both at the same time. Lizzie and Danny are college students who have taken the leap of moving in together, but Lizzie’s not sure if they’re ready for marriage, which Danny insists on when she unexpectedly gets pregnant. Pam and Nicki are in their 30s and are more than ready for a baby, but they try and try to no avail. Finally, Arlene and Alan are in their 40s and think their parenting days are over, having just sent their last child off to college. But one passionate night leads to a surprise pregnancy for Arlene, and they have to decide if they want to start back at square one to raise another kid.

The Baby musical first premiered to positive reviews on Broadway in 1983, and it has since been staged across the country, most notably at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, TrueNorth Cultural Arts in Ohio, and Showbiz Theatre Company in California. Baby has even gone on to be performed internationally in countries such as the Philippines and Australia.

Out of the Box Theatrics’ Off-Broadway production of Baby features an updated book from past predecessors, and the musical has been wholly reconceived for the 21st century with the original creative team: librettist Sybille Pearson, composer David Shire, and lyricist Richard Maltby, Jr. Ethan Paulini directs.

What to Watch For

  • In Sybille Pearson’s revised book, the couple trying for a baby, Pam and Nick, have been rewritten as a lesbian couple named Pam and Nicki.
  • The Baby show is accessible; all Sunday performances will have an American Sign Language interpreter so deaf and hard of hearing people can enjoy the show.
  • This isn’t the first time Baby has gotten an update. The 2004 Paper Mill Playhouse production was the first to feature the updated script and score that is now the sole version available to license, and which Out of the Box Theatrics used for its own update.
  • Out of the Box Theatrics is known for site-specific and immersive theatre, meaning that its shows are tailored for a specific location and/or the audience is invited to participate. Baby is the company’s latest site-specific show.
