More information about Is There Still Sex in the City?

Candace Bushnell, whose Manhattan lifestyle is the basis of Sex and the City, shares the next chapter of her life in her new one-woman show, Is There Still Sex In the City? Get Is There Still Sex In the City? tickets now.

Whereas Sex and the City infused Bushnell’s 30-year-old persona into that of a young Carrie Bradshaw, Is There Still Sex In the City? stars Bushnell as herself, recounting stories from the post-SATC chapter of her life. She’s still sipping drinks in designer clothes, but she’s also undergone a divorce at age 50 and settled in the Hamptons. Now, Bushnell has had to learn, alongside her friends, how to navigate the 21st-century dating scene. In the Is There Still Sex In the City? play, she shares her and her friends’ stories of love, sex, fashion, and more with her signature fabulosity, though with a new perspective.

Is There Still Sex In the City? had its world premiere at Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania in the summer of 2021. Now debuting in New York, where all Bushnell’s glamorous exploits take place, the show is right at home. Lorin Latarro, who most recently helmed Mrs. Doubtfire on Broadway, directs.

What to Watch For

  • The show’s title is a play on Sex and the City. Candace Bushnell’s essays for The New York Observer in the 1990s, which chronicled her and her friends’ lifestyles in New York, inspired the smash hit HBO TV show starring Sarah Jessica Parker. Bushnell published these essays as a book in 1997.
  • Is There Still Sex In the City? is also the name of Bushnell’s 2019 novel. The show is Bushnell’s personal retelling of the experiences that inspired the novel, which fictionalizes Bushnell’s story through four middle-aged friends dating in the 21st century.
  • Bushnell is not involved with the upcoming Sex and the City TV reboot And Just Like That…, which premieres in December during the run of Is There Still Sex In the City? The timing is simply a coincidence!
  • Who doesn’t want yet more Sex and the City content to binge? Bushnell originally sold Paramount the screen rights to the novel, but the deal fell apart, and a producer for David Foster helped her refine the Is There Still Sex In the City? Off-Broadway as a stage show afterwards. In a Harpers Bazaar interview, Bushnell said she still envisions the story on screen in the future.
  • Also in that interview, Bushnell said the friend who she considers her real-life “Samantha” features in Is There Still Sex In the City?, though her name has been changed for the show, and that friend is still in her life.
