About Dana H

FINAL WEEKS! MUST END NOVEMBER 28.

New York Magazine proclaims DANA H. is “unmissable. It’s the smash of the season.” This New York Times Critic’s Pick tells the true story of Dana Higginbotham, a woman who was held hostage for five months in a series of Florida motels. Her son, playwright Lucas Hnath, turned her harrowing and courageous words into this riveting new play.

Deirdre O'Connell brings Dana's real words to life on stage in "a singular, richly nuanced performance" (The Daily Beast).

Don't miss "the best play on Broadway" (The Wrap) now at the Lyceum Theatre thru November 28 only.

Profound, Great acting, Intense, Absorbing

See it if A riveting play with an enthralling storyline, perfectly directed and well-acted on an innovative stage.

Don’t see it if You do not enjoy doc-style theatre, nor watching an actor lip-syncing her part, though Mrs. O'Connell knows how to do it.

Absorbing, Profound, Unusual, Riveting, Extraordinary

See it if You want to experience an unexpectedly profound theatrical stunt.Genius storytelling done in a way that suits this particular story perfect.

Don’t see it if You can’t enjoy a great story or don’t appreciate a solo show that’s a little off-beat but tells a story that feels life changing.

Thought-provoking, Great acting, Riveting, Great staging, Intense

See it if you would enjoy a 1 person play with different surprises: lip synced, quality acting, quick scene changes, great lighting and disruption

Don’t see it if you do not like listening to a conversation where only person is seen or you are bothered by sound and light blasts that intensify the story

Thought-provoking, Profound, Must see, Great acting, Enchanting

See it if 90min no intermission. Lips-syncing for majority of time. Actor trying to reconstruct an interviewee’s human actions. Deeply human. Surreal.

Don’t see it if Violence & rape content warning. “Women victims are always blamed.” .. “I can never go back to my previous world.” ..profound loneliness..

Dana was a psych ward chaplain when she became close with a troubled patient, an ex-con looking for a new life. Through text drawn directly from interviews with Dana, we learn the gripping true story of what followed. Dana is kidnapped by the patient and forced to travel with him across Florida for five months. Dana H. is the harrowing tale of an intimate bond that becomes an inescapable nightmare.

The show’s only performer, acclaimed downtown theatre actress Deirdre O’Connell, lip-syncs to audio of interviews conducted with the real Dana in a performance praised for its “"near-perfect specificity" by The New York Times and declared “astonishing” by Time Out. O’Connell won both Outer Critics Circle and Obie Awards for the performance following a 2020 run at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre.

The off-Broadway run of Dana H. won universal critical acclaim. The New York Times called it “haunting,” “brilliant” and “one of the richest works of theater to come along in many seasons,” while New York Magazine praised its “well-honed beauty.” Get your Dana H. Broadway tickets today.

What to Watch For

  • Playwright Lucas Hnath is best known for the Broadway hit A Doll’s House, Part 2, which won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2017. His play Hillary and Clinton was also seen on Broadway in 2019.
  • The text of the Dana H. play is drawn entirely from interviews conducted with the real Dana, who is playwright Lucas Hnath’s mother. Hnath edited and shaped the interviews into a theatrical piece.
  • The interviews with Dana which form the basis of Dana H. were conducted by Steve Cosson, a celebrated experimental theater artist, whose voice is also heard in the show.
  • Dana H. plays in repertory on Broadway with Is This A Room. Both are documentary style plays which ran Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre.
  • Though Dana H. was able to reach opening night at the Vineyard in early 2020, its acclaimed run was ultimately cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.
