About Lackawanna Blues on Broadway

Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson returns to MTC for the Broadway debut of his brilliant solo play celebrating the strong, big-hearted woman who raised him: Miss Rachel. In a 1950s boarding house outside Buffalo, Nanny, as she was affectionately called, opened her doors to anyone and everyone in need of kindness, hope, compassion and care. Giving a tour-de-force performance accompanied by live music written by acclaimed composer Bill Sims, Jr. and performed by Blues Hall of Fame Guitarist Junior Mack, Santiago-Hudson embodies more than 20 vibrant characters, creating a richly textured reminiscence that’s inspiring, uplifting and right at home on Broadway.

Great acting, Entertaining, Absorbing, Very touching

See it if you want to be transported to long ago Lackawanna NY in a loving tribute to the woman who raised R. Santiago-Hudson. Great storytelling

Don’t see it if one actor switching character abruptly confuses you too much. The wonderful acting helps greatly but you may find this type of show dizzying

Great acting, Masterful, Soulful, Heartwarming, Touching

See it if Virtuosic solo performance full of love and admiration. Captivating vignettes. Flavorful blues guitar accompaniment.

Don’t see it if You don’t enjoy solo actors playing many roles. It bogs down a little in the middle.

He is joined by Blues Hall of Fame guitarist Junior Mack, performing original music by legendary blues composer Bill Sims, Jr.. Santiago-Hudson’s tour-de-force performance will mark the first Broadway production by a non-profit company since the shutdown of March 2020.

Lackawanna Blues made its world premiere off-Broadway in 2001 at The Public Theater. A film adaptation was later released by HBO in 2005. The MTC production marks the play’s Broadway debut.
