More information about Sing Street

Sing Street tells the story of a teenage boy named Conor who forms a band with his classmates to impress a mysterious girl he fancies named Raphina. While they write and perform original music (and even film some music videos!), the band forms a camaraderie that helps them through the struggles and hardships of being teen boys in ‘80s Dublin, Ireland. Together, they balance Ireland’s recession, abuse at their Christian Brothers school, Synge Street, and young love. Set an alert for Sing Street tickets on Broadway on TodayTix.

Tony Award-winning director Rebecca Taichman (Indecent) and Tony Award-winning writer Enda Walsh (Once) bring John Carney’s indie hit film to the stage. With an energetic score that embraces the funky sounds of the era, Sing Street on Broadway celebrates the healing power of music, brotherhood, and the thrill of first love. The joyful musical also features movement and choreography by Tony Award-winning choreographer Sonya Tayeh and set design by Bob Crowley (The Inheritance).

Sing Street premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop in December 2019, and Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote that the musical “takes on fresh, senses-stirring life.” Visit 1982 Dublin to hear fun hits from the 2016 film like “Drive it Like You Stole It” and “Brown Shoes.”

What to Watch For

  • Sing Street is the second film by John Carney to be adapted to the stage, the first being the 2007 film Once, for which Enda Walsh also wrote the book.
  • It’s been a busy few years for choreographer Sonya Tayeh — in addition to Sing Street, she also choreographed the movie-to-musical stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge!
  • New York Theatre Workshop also produced the pre-Broadway premieres of hit groundbreaking plays like Jeremy O Harris’s Slave Play and Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me.
  • Similarly to Once, the actors in Sing Street are also the musicians and play multiple instruments throughout the show. In addition to original music by Gary Clark and John Carney, the actors also perform ‘80s hits like Duran Duran’s “Rio” and Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough.”
  • Recommended for ages 8+ due to adult language. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
