About Take Me Out on Broadway

In this Tony Award®-winning Best Play, playwright Richard Greenberg celebrates the personal and professional intricacies of America’s favorite pastime. When Darren Lemming, the star center fielder for the Empires, comes out of the closet, the reception off the field reveals a barrage of long-held unspoken prejudices. Facing some hostile teammates and fraught friendships, Darren is forced to contend with the challenges of being a gay person of color within the confines of a classic American institution. As the Empires struggle to rally toward a championship season, the players and their fans begin to question tradition, their loyalties, and the price of victory.

Please Note: Out of respect and support for our actors and in order to create a camera-free environment, Second Stage will be working with Yondr for all performances of Take Me Out.

Upon arrival at the venue, all phones and smart watches are placed in Yondr cases by our staff and will be unlocked at the end of the show. Guests maintain possession of their phones and smart watches at all times and may access them in the designated Phone Use Area if needed.

Tell Me More

The ugly underside of America’s favorite pastime is brought to the surface in Take Me Out, Richard Greenberg’s timely and powerful work now revived by Second Stage Theatre. Take Me Out interrogates long-held American traditions, the nature of fandom, and how much an individual must sacrifice in the name of victory.

Take Me Out is a play that focuses on Darren Lemming. He’s the star center fielder for the fictional baseball team, the Empires. At the height of his career, Lemming comes out as gay. The fan response is mixed — but that’s nothing compared to the reaction from Lemming’s teammates in the locker room. As long unspoken prejudices come to light, Lemming must confront the bigotry and impossible standards that face a successful gay athlete of color.

Take Me Out won three Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for best play in 2003. It was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize For Drama in the same year. Even though the Take Me Out play is inspired by an American sport, Take Me Out made its world premiere in London at the Donmar Warehouse in 2002, before moving off-Broadway to The Public Theater later that year. The production then transferred to the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway in 2003.

Take Me Out has received widespread acclaim for its unflinching exploration of intolerance, self-acceptance and toxic masculinity — themes which resonate just as powerfully today. Greenberg “turns baseball into something like grand opera,” Ben Brantley wrote in The New York Times, declaring the play “an unconditional, all-American epiphany that, in these days of fretful ambivalence, is something to cherish.” Scott Ellis directs the Take Me Out Broadway revival, which is the first in just under 20 years.
