More information about Freestyle Love Supreme

Not all theatergoers are lucky enough to see a show’s “mic check,” that sacred moment before every performance at which sound technicians adjust volume levels — and performers let loose in the lead up to curtain. But at “Freestyle Love Supreme,” the mic check sets the tone for what’s in store at the hip-hop-infused improvisational show.

Created in part by Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda long before his hit musical “Hamilton” took Broadway by storm, the 80-minute piece of performance art fuses hip-hop and improv for a completely new show each night. Performers Andrew Bancroft (“Jelly Donut”), Arthur Lewis (“Arthur The Geniuses”), Bill Sherman (“King Sherman”), Chris Sullivan (“Shockwave”), Anthony Veneziale (“Two-Touch”) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (“UTK”) take suggestions from the audience to craft an exciting evening specific to their crowd. Expect new songs and even some surprise guests like “Hamilton” stars Chris Jackson, James Monroe Iglehart, Daveed Diggs, and Miranda himself.

What to watch for

Don’t expect to Instagram the performance — at the Off-Broadway run of “Freestyle Love Supreme,” cell phones will be checked at the door.

Writer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda is a producer of “Freestyle Love Supreme,” marking his stage producorial debut.

Miranda and director Thomas Kail began collaborating with their friend, Anthony Veneziale, during their time working on “In the Heights” to first bring “Freestyle Love Supreme” to life at Ars Nova in 2004.

The title “Freestyle Love Supreme” is inspired by the John Coltrane jazz suite “A Love Supreme.”

Miranda reveals that “Freestyle Love Supreme” has shaped his writing “more than any other creative endeavor” he’s been a part of.
