A lot can happen in a year. At least that’s case for down-on-his luck Josh Cohen. Not only is he single and slumming it, but just a few days before Valentine’s Day, he was robbed and left with only one Neil Diamond CD in his run-down digs. His luck changes, however, when he receives a massive check in the mail made out to “Josh Cohen,” though he may not be the intended recipient. Regardless, the newfound fortune — whether Josh cashes the check or not — does him well, as evidenced by “Narrator Josh,” his future, slimmed-down self who tells the story of how he found a happy ending — for the most part.
Written by longtime friends David Rossmer and Steve Rosen and directed by Hunter Foster, “The Other Josh Cohen,” stars its writers in the title role — Rosen as the unlucky schlub with an unbecoming stache, and Rossmer as the rejuvenated guitar rocker.
What to watch for
Writers and stars David Rossmer and Steve Rosen met as teenagers, when they attended French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts together.
Rossmer and Rosen have spent eight years working on “The Other Josh Cohen,” which made its New York debut in 2010, under the title “V-Day,” at the New York Musical Theater Festival. It later played the SoHo Playhouse, New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, and the Geva Theater Center in Rochester.
In its initial Off-Broadway run at SoHo Playhouse, “The Other Josh Cohen” was nominated for six Drama Desk Awards and the Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical.
Rossmer and Rosen wrote the initial draft of what became “The Other Josh Cohen” in a matter of months.
Takeout food menus take credit for some of the show’s lyrics. “‘Samuel Cohen’s Family Tree’ was [inspired by] a menu for a Korean barbecue restaurant,” Rosen reveals. The restaurant is Annie’s Korean Barbecue.
