About The Cherry Orchard

Don’t miss Olivier Award-winning Kristin Scott Thomas and Stephen Mangan in The Cherry Orchard, Anton Chekhov’s famous tragicomedy at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Book The Cherry Orchard tickets on TodayTix.

The Cherry Orchard in London introduces us to Lyubov Ranevskaya, who comes home after years of living abroad to find her family’s estate drowning in debt. The property is soon to be auctioned, and saving it might require destroying the cherry orchard the family has loved for generations.

Lopakhin, a successful businessman whose family once served on the estate, believes he has found the most practical course of action. His solution would involve destroying the orchard. Ranevskaya and her relatives, however, remain deeply attached to the life that the orchard represents and struggle with the choices facing them.

Kristin Scott Thomas stars as Ranevskaya opposite Stephen Mangan as Lopakhin. They are joined by Vinette Robinson, Nadia Parkes, Jack Riddiford, Karl Johnson, Peter Wight, Ruby Bentall, Megan Cusack, Noof Ousellam, and Shubham Saraf.

A very uninspired version of the classic. Poor translation and scattered direction. The marquee name did not deliver the tour de force I was expecting.

Great acting. Interesting story-telling.

The play was great, but the seats are very high, the balcony is so steep, so it felt a bit expensive for the view we got. And because of that, people in front of us lean forwards so I could barely see the stage at times. If there was a way for staff to ask people not to lean forward so much, it would help, but I appreciate that’s a difficult and awkward task.

More information about The Cherry Orchard

The Cherry Orchard is a play that premiered at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1904. It was Chekhov’s final play, and though it deals with financial ruin and much loss, Chekhov considered it a comedy. Its original director, Konstantin Stanislavski, famously approached it much more like a tragedy, beginning a century-long debate about the play’s genre.

This new version comes from playwright Conor McPherson. McPherson previously adapted Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya for director Ian Rickson, who reunites with him for this West End production.

Rickson also has a longstanding creative relationship with Kristin Scott Thomas as he directed her in productions including The Seagull, Betrayal, Old Times, Electra, and Lyonesse.

Adapted by Conor McPherson and directed by Olivier and Tony Award nominee Ian Rickson, The Cherry Orchard brings Chekhov’s story of inevitable change back to the West End.

The wider creative team on this production includes Chloe Lamford on set design, Bruno Poet on lighting, Tom Gibbons on sound, and Stephen Warbeck as composer.
