John Proctor is the Villain is a play that centres around a high school in rural Georgia where five teenage girls are studying Arthur Miller’s The Crucible while trying to navigate friendships, relationships, and a culture that is rapidly growing and shifting.
As allegations emerge within their community, the students begin to look at John Proctor through a different lens. This supposedly heroic figure at the centre of Miller’s play doesn't seem so heroic after all. Their classroom conversations quickly become inseparable from their real-life experiences.
With engaging pop music, humour, female rage, and friendship all boiling at the surface, the girls begin taking control of the narratives they’ve been taught and decide to look at them in a new light.
Kimberly Belflower writes the play, with Tony Award winner Danya Taymor directing its West End transfer following the production’s sold-out Royal Court run.

John Proctor is the Villain in London reached Broadway in 2025, where Sadie Sink starred as Shelby Holcomb, and the production received seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play for Danya Taymor.
Its UK premiere followed at the Royal Court Theatre in 2026 as part of the venue’s 70th anniversary season. The location felt especially poignant as Arthur Miller’s The Crucible made its London debut at the Royal Court in 1956.
Belflower sets her play in the aftermath of the #MeToo movement, and uses a high-school literature class to explore a young generation reassessing the cultural narratives it has inherited about gender and authority.
The West End production reunites Belflower and Taymor, with costumes by Sarah Laux, lighting by Natasha Katz, sound and original composition by Palmer Hefferan, and projections by Hannah Wasileski.
