More information about Othello

Othello was first performed in 1604 and remains one of Shakespeare’s most gripping plays to this day. It’s a tale of lies, broken trust, and lives destroyed by jealousy. This revival reimagines a timeless story for a new generation, confronting themes like toxic masculinity head-on.

David Harewood OBE (Homeland, Best of Enemies) leads the cast in the title role in his highly anticipated return to the London stage starring in this role for the third time. Harewood became the first Black man to play the role of Othello at the National Theatre in 1997, something he was very conscious of at the time.

He said to The Guardian, “The last time I played it I was very conscious of being the first black actor to play it at the National… I think I was carrying perhaps a little bit more of the history than I was aware of at the time.”

With his talented castmates, as well as the direction of the outstanding Tony Award-winning Tom Morris (War Horse, Dr Semmelweis, The Grinning Man), this rendition of Shakespeare’s classic Othello is sure to keep audiences captivated.

What to watch for

  • The character of Iago has more lines than Othello and is only second to the character of Hamlet, making him one of Shakespeare’s more dominant villains.
  • The first female actress to appear on the English stage was Margaret Hughes in 1660 in the role of Desdemona.
  • In 1968, a musical adaptation of Othello was created called Catch My Soul.
  • The famous euphemism of ‘the green-eyed monster’ originated in Othello.
