More information about A Man for All Seasons

A Man for All Seasons is a play with an excellent cast; in addition to Martin Shaw, the cast includes Gary Wilmot, Edward Bennett, Abigail Cruttenden, Nicholas Day, Calum Finlay, Asif Khan, Hari Kang, Sam Parks, Sam Phillips, Louisa Sexton, Timothy Watson, Orlando James, and Huw Brentnall.

This gripping story was written by Robert Bolt—it began as a radio play in 1954, followed by a live television version produced by the BBC in 1957. In 1960, it evolved into a full-length play that opened at the Globe Theatre (now the Gielgud Theatre).

Since then, it’s been staged numerous times, including the recent UK tour starring Martin Shaw, which broke ticket sales records. The Daily Mail review said, “Bolt’s play still dazzles, turning complex ideas into crisp dramatic action with aphoristic wit.”

What to watch for

  • Martin Shaw also starred in a 2006 staging of A Man for All Seasons.
  • The 1966 film version of this play was adapted by Robert Bolt. Paul Scofield, who starred as Sir Thomas More in the West End stage premiere, took the same role in the film.
  • Two different endings were written for this play, one for the play and one for the film.
  • As The Times review said, “Martin Shaw — who turned 80 this month — gives us an unworldly statesman who is quietly stubborn, holding to his austere beliefs even when they lead him into a fatal conflict with his monarch.”
