More information about Cow | Deer

Cow | Deer in London utilizes four actors alongside sound artists to tell an experimental wordless story.

Director Katie Mitchell is at the play’s helm. She is known for her career, which has spanned over 100 shows, and last year, she directed the experimental play Bluets, also at the Royal Court Theatre.

The Guardian said of the staging, “It is fitting that such an experimental text should get experimental treatment in its staging. The director, Katie Mitchell, uses microphones, cameras and screens to turn it into theatre as overt and contemporaneous film-making.”

This show is a co-production with the National Theatre of Greece. Additionally, the University of Oxford supported the show’s initial development.

What to watch for

  • Nina Segal was the winner of the 2022 Playwright’s Scheme Award.
  • Following Bluets' success during David Byrne’s first year as artistic director, The Guardian said, “it suggests an intent to push mainstream theatre into edgier ground.” That trend has continued with this new experimental play pushing the boundaries of what theatre can be.
  • Director Katie Mitchell was awarded an OBE in 2009.
  • Melanie Wilson’s art centres on sound, and experimental forms of composition, and he work earned her an Offie Award in 2011.
