The Years is a play that spans generations. The Years in London is adapted by Eline Arbo, and Stephanie Bain is the English Adapter. Taking the source material of Annie Ernaux’s memoir, they expertly balanced using book passages as narration while some are transformed into dialogue. Eline Arbo, the artistic director of International Theatre Amsterdam, is also the show’s director. The exceptional creative team also includes set designer Juul Dekker, costume designer Rebekka Wörmann, and lighting designer Varja Klosse.
The play first premiered in Dutch in 2022 at The Hague, and in the summer of 2024, it had its English premiere at Almeida Theatre. The Almeida Theatre production was a hit with audiences and critics. One of the many five-star reviews the show received was from The Guardian, which said, “There is so much emotional depth, surprise and theatrical virtuosity here that it holds you rapt across the ages. What an accomplishment.”
