About Death of England: Closing Time

See the final installment in the critically acclaimed Death of England play trilogy, Death of England: Closing Time, starring Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education, Dune) and Erin Doherty (The Crown, Chloe). Book Death of England: Closing Time tickets on TodayTix.

Death of England: Closing Time in London can be watched alone or alongside the other two shows in the series, Death of England: Michael and Death of England: Delroy.

The play tells the story of Carly (Erin Doherty) and Denise (Sharon Duncan-Brewster), who are left picking up the pieces after the loss of their family business. As the women work to close up for the last time at Carly’s flower shop and Denise’s patty shop, there are difficult conversations in store as they explore topics from cancel culture to race and family dynamics.

“Inside the plays, what we’re always trying to reference is our ability to survive, carry on and move forward, however incremental it feels,” said co-writer and director Clint Dyer.

More information about Death of England: Closing Time

Death of England: Closing Time is a play that opened on 18 September 2023 and ran through 11 November 2023. As part of the series that has been called a “state of the nation” project, the play has been a hit with audiences and critics.

A 4-star review from the Guardian said of the show, “Love, in the end, is the point: like Michael and Delroy, Carly and Denise are flawed, contradictory, at odds, but stand by each other in spite of it. You can’t help but be moved as they walk into the future together, hand in hand.”

The play is written by Clint Dyer and Roy Williams, who were commissioned by the Royal Court and the Guardian in 2014 to write a 10-minute filmed ‘micro-play.’ After completing the project, the writing duo decided that they wanted to expand the story and wrote Death of England: Michael, and in time, they wrote Death of England: Delroy and Death of England: Closing Time.

What to watch for

  • Audience members who have watched the other Death of England plays will notice that this play includes brief updates on the characters of Michael and Delroy.
  • All the Death of England plays have the same creative team, which further helps tie the stories together, from the costumes to the lighting design and more.
  • The other Death of England plays have just one actor and are monologues. However, this play has two actors, so it flips back and forth between scenes of dialogue and monologue.
  • In addition to the trilogy of plays, the filmed National Theatre at Home: Death of England: Face to Face premiered in 2021 and further expanded the story of the characters in the trilogy. The film was nominated for a 2022 BAFTA TV Award.
