More information about Death of England: Michael

Death of England: Michael is a play by Clint Dyer, a versatile actor, director, and writer, and Roy Williams, a multi-award-winning playwright. Together, they created the character of Michael Fletcher in 2014 when they were commissioned by the Royal Court, in collaboration with the Guardian, to write a filmed “microplay.” Upon completion of the short project, they decided to expand the story, which led to the eventual writing of the trio of Death of England plays.

“Inside the plays, what we’re always trying to reference is our ability to survive, carry on and move forward, however incremental it feels,” Dyer said.

In addition to co-writing the play, Dyer is also the excellent director staging the show. The talented creative team also includes co-sound designers Benjamin Grant (Machinal) and Tony Award-winning Pete Malkin (The Encounter), co-set and costume designers Sadeysa Greenaway-Bailey (Tambo and Bones) and Olivier Award-winning ULTZ (Jerusalem), and lighting designer Jackie Shemesh (The Seagull).

What to watch for

  • Clint Dyer directed the 2021 film, Death of England: Face to Face, which was nominated in 2022 for a Royal Television Society Award for Single Drama.
  • While the trilogy of plays is interconnected, each play, including Death of England: Michael, can also be watched as a stand-alone show.
  • Audiences will witness Thomas Coombes's excellence as an actor in both the range of emotions he portrays Michael going through and the variety of other individuals in Michael's life that he does impressions of.
  • The first run of Death of England: Michael in January 2020 closed just days before the first of the UK COVID lockdowns.
