More information about Giant

Giant in London has a talented creative team at its helm including Tony and Olivier-winning director Nicholas Hytner (Carousel, The History Boys), lighting designer Anna Watson (That is Not Who I Am, Imposter 22), Tony and Olivier-winning theatre designer Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, An American in Paris), and sound designer Alexandra Faye Braithwaite (Bloody Elle, How Not to Drown).

This play is the first by Mark Rosenblatt. However, he is no stranger to theatre as he’s been a director for years, including his time as the associate director at Leeds Playhouse from 2013-16. He also wrote and directed the short film, Ganef, inspired by his family’s Holocaust survival story. The film won multiple awards and was selected for numerous film festivals.

Giant is my first play. When I was tearing my hair out writing it at my kitchen table, I never for a second imagined it would premiere on this landmark stage, and with this calibre of cast and creative team. It’s completely surreal and thrilling to have it programmed as part of David Byrne’s first season. I really hope Giant gives Royal Court audiences an uncomfortably funny, urgent and provocative night in the theatre,” Rosenblatt said.

What to watch for

  • Giant is a play that was originally commissioned for the Bridge Theatre. However, they could not stage the show because of Guys and Dolls, so the show was moved to the Royal Court to be a part of David Byrne's first year as the artistic director.
  • Roald Dahl has recently been in the news when, in 2023, many words in his books were altered or removed from upcoming printings to take out negative references to gender, skin color, disabilities, and the like.
  • Some of Roald Dahl's stories have been turned into plays and musicals, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. However, this is the first play centered on the scandal surrounding his personal life.
  • The talented cast is thrilled to be a part of this brand-new play. As Romola Garai said, "Giant is an extraordinary piece of new writing and I couldn't be more honoured to be part of bringing this fascinating, knotty, complicated, and unafraid piece to audiences for the first time."
