About Harry Clarke

After winning numerous awards in New York, the one-man comedic thriller Harry Clarke is now at the Ambassadors Theatre, starring Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor Billy Crudup in his highly anticipated West End debut. Book tickets to Harry Clarke on TodayTix now.

Throughout the 80-minute show, Crudup shows his mysterious side as he takes us on a journey as young, awkward Philip Brugglestein from Indiana. When he moves to Manhattan, he leaves Philip behind once and for all and embraces the identity of suave Harry Clarke, a London charmer who speaks in a Cockney accent. He stalks a wealthy man and ends up befriending the entire family; however, the more outrageous his lies become, the likelier it is that something could go terribly wrong.

Harry Clarke in London is a riveting show that will leave you in awe, as Crudup plays 19 parts with a minimal set that puts his acting abilities front and center.

More information about Harry Clarke

Before its West End debut, Harry Clarke saw success off Broadway in 2017. The show's world premiere at Vineyard Theatre was such a hit that its sold-out run was twice extended. Crudup also won numerous awards for his role, including an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award. Writer David Cale, who is known for his one-person shows, also won awards for the play, including a 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show.

Beyond Harry Clarke, Crudup is also recognizable for his other roles on screen and stage. In 2020, he won an Emmy Award for his role as Cory Ellison in The Morning Show, and he won a Tony Award in 2007 for his role as Vissarion Belinsky in Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia. Crudup also starred in the films Almost Famous and Big Fish.

What to watch for

  • Crudup plays with accent and body language to differentiate the characters. As The New York Times’s review of the world premiere reads, “He doesn’t impersonate those people, exactly, but sketches them for us as they might be seen through Harry’s or Philip’s eyes.”
  • Numerous critics raved about Crudup’s performance. BroadwayWorld said of a run at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California in 2023, “Crudup gives a mighty performance, able in the blink of an eye to morph into multiple characters.” The New York Times said of the world premiere that Crudup has “time of his life in a sly role terrifically suited to his gifts.”
  • David Cale won an Obie Award in 1999 for his play Lillian, another one-actor show. Leigh Silverman is the award-winning director of Harry Clarke, and she has won two Obie Awards.
  • Cale is also an actor who has performed in many of the plays he has written.
