When the For Black Boys play premiered in 2021, the show received high praise: a five-star review in The Stage praised everything “literally and metaphorically… how wonderful that more people get to receive this message that Black boys are beautiful and valuable.”

In Ryan Calais Cameron's play, six young Black men meet for group therapy sessions. As they open up to each other, they let their hearts and their imaginations run wild. All they want is the opportunity to survive in a complicated world. Sure, there’s tough conversations to be had, but there’s also joy in reflection and reconciliation.

The For Black Boys play honors Ntozake Shange’s influential play, For Colored Girls. While the original focuses on the lives of African-American women, For Black Boys captures what it means to be a Black man in 21st-century Britain. However, American events inspired playwright Ryan Calais Cameron to create this story. Trayvon Martin's death in 2013 motivated Cameron to write a thought-provoking play to show that black lives matter.
"[This is] a momentous occasion for my community and those who have taken the show into their hearts. We really hope this show will drastically change the commercial theatre landscape by ensuring theatre is for everyone and reflects our society," said Cameron. For Black Boys plays at the Garrick Theatre.
