About Groundhog Day

Look forward to brighter days at the Old Vic, and book Groundhog Day tickets on TodayTix.

Although the "groundhog day" phrase is used to mean a repetitive, unpleasant situation, the Groundhog Day musical returning is definitely good news! When the musical premiered in 2016, it won two Oliviers: Best New Musical, and Best Actor in a Musical for Andy Karl as Phil Connors.

Now in 2023, Andy Karl returns to play the cynical Pennsylvania weatherman with a heart of gold. London Theatre raved about Karl in Groundhog Day in 2016, saying: “Andy Karl pulls off the impressive feat of giving its inevitability a high-stakes tension. He's understandably bewildered by what's happening, then he throws caution to the wind and starts to enjoy the playfulness. This is a full-blooded new musical that completely earns its place on its stage.” If you missed Groundhog Day before, then don’t make the same mistake twice — see it now in London.

Based on the 1993 film of the same name, Groundhog Day follows Phil Connors, a cynical television weatherman who cannot fathom strange festivities in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Once Phil arrives in the small town, he finds himself stuck in a time loop where everyday is 2 February. In order to continue real life, Phil must change the way he approaches life and be accepting of others.

Watch the timeless comic parable of love, hope and transformation.

Clever, Entertaining, Funny

See it if you want to spend an evening smiling from ear to ear. Funny, excellently staged and surprisingly heartwarming.

Don’t see it if you don’t like the notion of repetition which is really the gimmick here, but personally it didn’t get stale for me at all.

Dizzying, Great singing, Great acting, Funny, Clever

See it if you want to treat yourself to incredibly inventive stagecraft in a lightweight but fun musical

Don’t see it if you need a memorable score (nothing stuck with me on the train back from the theater) or are prudish

Great staging, Great singing, Great acting, Funny, Entertaining

See it if you want to see something light-hearted. The acting and staging are first rate and Andy Karl doesn't disappoint.

Don’t see it if you don't like to see thing repeated over and over again. That's the point of the show, but it could get irrating after so many repeats.

Great staging, Funny, Entertaining, Enchanting, Delightful

See it if you want a feel good musical, with catchy songs and brilliant staging. It's hilarious, yet also really beautiful and touching at times.

Don’t see it if you don't like repetition - songs are repeated multiple times (with slightly altered lyrics), but this is part of the plot and is done well.

More information about Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day reunites two theatrical geniuses: director Matthew Warchus and musician and lyricist Tim Minchin. They previously created Matilda the Musical for the Royal Shakespeare Company — both Matilda and Groundhog Day took home Oliviers for Best New Musical. They’re joined by a fine creative team, including set and costume designer Rob Howell, lighting designer Hugh Vanstone, and sound designer Simon Baker.

In order to bring the film to life, Groundhog Day needs a zingy, witty script. Thankfully, the film’s screenwriter, Danny Rubin, returns to create an entertaining musical story. The original film is preserved in the National Film Registry, and its storyline is utilised as a religious fable. Let's hope the West End musical is similarly preserved in the hearts and minds of theatregoers.

What to Watch For:

  • Andy Karl will play weatherman Phil Connors. He originated the role at the Old Vic in 2016, and later played Phil in Groundhog Day on Broadway. Karl won an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor.
  • The first “Groundhog Day” celebration of its kind took place at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on 2 Feb. 1887. Every 2 February, if a groundhog does not see its shadow, then spring can begin. If the animal sees its shadow, the groundhog returns to its hole — superstition then says this ushers six weeks of winter. The annual event is now a three-day long festival.
  • The tradition is based on Candlemas, an ancient Christian tradition dating back to the 4th century, in which religious leaders celebrated the light after winter
