New York Theatre Guide raved about the Broadway production, praising the “rare feat to translate style and comedy from one genre to another… The Spongebob Musical captures all the silly, goofy, broadly camp, good-natured fun of the Nickelodeon TV series.” That’s also down to an exhilarating score comprised of songs from iconic pop and alt-rock musicians: David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, They Might Be Giants, and Panic! at the Disco to name a few.
At the start of the musical, SpongeBob SquarePants is determined to prove that he is more than just a simple sponge. With his BFFs Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks by his side, SpongeBob SquarePants knows he can save his beloved hometown from an impending volcanic eruption. All they need is a bit of courage and a lot of drive. You don’t have to be a kid — or a SpongeBob aficionado — to appreciate the upbeat message of this buoyant show. So grab your scuba gear and dive down to Bikini Bottom for nonstop fun at The Spongebob Musical.
We know Spongebob Squarepants as a zany, vibrant animated character. But the original character came from the classroom. The Spongebob creator and former science educator Stephen Hillenburg sought inspiration from educational comics to create the titular sea sponge in order to teach marine biology. Most of the beloved characters from the show are anthropomorphic versions of actual sea creatures: Patrick is a starfish, Squidward is an octopus, and Sheldon J. Plankton is a crustacean called a copepod.
SpongeBob SquarePants debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999. Nearly 25 years later, the charming cartoon continues to captivate audiences. The Broadway musical, conceived by original director Tina Landau, debuted in 2016 in Chicago. When it transferred to Broadway, the show picked up 12 Tony Award nominations — making it the most nominated show of the season. The UK/Ireland tour began in spring 2023 and will anchor down at Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in London this summer.
