About Eureka Day

Make an appointment to see the Academy Award-winning actress Helen Hunt in the European premiere of Eureka Day at the Old Vic. Book Eureka Day tickets on TodayTix today.

When Jonathan Spector’s play premiered in 2018, he could have never expected the topic of mandatory vaccinations to become a major talking point. 2 years into the Coronavirus pandemic, Eureka Day now adds an extra layer of discussion. So much so, the New York Times hailed Eureka Day as “The perfect play for our age of disagreement.”

Unlike the play that follows a group of quarrelling executive members, Jonathan Spector’s debut play was met with unanimous praise. Time Out praised the “comic gold from the little tugs-of-war for control.” Leave your opinions on vaccinations at the door with Eureka Day.

Set in 2017 at the start of the Trump administration, the Eureka Day play follows events at Eureka Day school in Berkeley, California. The school’s executive committee once praised themselves on allowing any child to attend their school.

When the board members discuss difficult topics, they struggle to agree. So when mumps spreads through the school, can they agree on maintaining a culture of inclusivity? There's discussions of making vaccinations mandatory, the importance of tolerance and togetherness, and free choice.

More information about Eureka Day

While Eureka Day may be a fictional story, it’s rooted in truth. The Eureka Day school is a free school, breaking away from formal schooling and placing a greater emphasis on families making decisions for their children.

Jonathan Spector didn’t predict the future either. He wrote Eureka Day about an outbreak of mumps. However, the messages told in Eureka Day could apply to any medical outbreak. It’s interesting to see what triumphs though: ideas, or bliss.

What to Watch For:

  • There’s an all-star cast appearing in Eureka Day London performances. See Pride’s Ben Schnetzer, This Is Us's Susan Kelechi Watson, and Superstore’s Mark McKinney. You’ll want to watch these television stars on stage.
  • Eureka Day was a New York Times Critics’ Pick in 2019.
  • The Eureka Day play is set in Berkeley, California. Playwright Jonathan Spector chose Berkeley as the setting due to the city’s commitment to live by their values.
