About The Secret Garden

See Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel, The Secret Garden, on stage in an all-new play by writer Holly Robinson (soft animals) and director Anna Himali Howard (Kabul Goes Pop, Graceland). Book The Secret Garden tickets on TodayTix.

The Secret Garden is a play set in 1903. It tells the story of young Mary Lennox, who, after becoming orphaned, is sent from India to the Misselthwaite Manor in Yorkshire to live with her solitary uncle. Mary soon discovers a secret, overgrown garden that she is determined to bring to life.

“She’s a strange, neglected little girl who has had a really hard time, and she finds herself in this house full of grief. Through her strangeness and her insistence, she turns everything upside-down and completely changes the house and the people living there. I have always been drawn to those strange or weird Victorian girls that nobody likes,” Robinson said.

Please note the auditorium and stage are completely uncovered and shows in the main theatre repertoire may be cancelled or abandoned because of the weather (this excludes films and one-off live music and comedy shows which are never cancelled because of the weather). Tickets are non-refundable in the event of cancellation because of the weather but may be exchanged. Otherwise, please be aware that all ticket purchases are nonexchangeable and non-refundable unless a show is cancelled for non-weather related reasons.

What to watch for

  • The garden in the original novel is based on the overgrown garden at the Great Maytham Hall in Kent from when Burnett was there.
  • The Secret Garden musical adaptation has had numerous successful revivals, including the Royal Shakespeare Company performances in 2000 and 2001, which broke box office records at the time.
  • The Secret Garden is now a classic story, but while Burnett was alive, it wasn’t as popular as her other books. When she passed away, the novel wasn’t even mentioned in her obituary.
  • 11-year-old Daisy Eagen played Mary Lennox in the original Broadway run of the musical. She earned a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, which made her the youngest female recipient of the award.
