There's a new detail —&nbsp;an elephant, a windmill —&nbsp;everywhere you look in the bedazzled <a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/piccadilly-theatre" target="_blank">Piccadilly Theatre</a>, dripping in red lights, lace, and velvet with Derek McLane's immersive set. Welcome to the Moulin Rouge.&nbsp;This is not your Parisian night club from the early 2000's in the film or from the turn-of-the-century (other century) France where the tragic love story of fledgling American writer Christian and washed-up showgirl Satine is set. This, mon chérie, is an all-new, all-adrenaline rush of a show that leverages the movie's magic and adds the secret ingredient: theatrical magic.&nbsp;Timbers is not afraid to use every tool in his directing arsenal with this self-aware, but not self-conscious, amalgamation of vintage and modern, classic and contemporary. Every creative team member is clearly working overtime to deliver excellence and opulence.Seventy-plus pop songs, precisely arranged by music supervisor Justin Levine? Check. Show-stopping ensemble dance numbers choreographed like a pop concert by Sonya Tayeh? You bet. A veritable smorgasbord of lighting effects from designer Justin Townsend? Of course. Jewel-dripping bodices and crushed velvet for days in Catherine Zuber's elaborate ensembles? Bien sûr.However, sometimes extravagance can mask the cracks, which make the barrier between art and life transparent. On Wednesday night's performance, this show-stopper literally stopped. During Act 2, between high-energy ensemble numbers "Chandelier" and "Roxanne," the show was held due to technical difficulties for about 20 minutes.&nbsp;While stage management handled everything smoothly and professionally, the momentary pause felt like watching a show within a show within a show. After all, Moulin Rouge! The Musical catalogues the backstage drama of the eponymous nightclub struggling to make it while putting on a new production.Here we were in the audience, watching a company that's weathered more than its share of Covid difficulties and delays with an opening twice-postponed, still doing their thing and putting on a show, despite the hardship.It's a testament to resilience and artistry, something that both the show and this company clearly celebrate. The leading lovers, played by Liisi LaFontaine and Jamie Bogyo, deliver a youthful energy that belies their characters' weary struggles, and each is charming and well-sung.&nbsp;However, the standouts of the evening are in the supporting cast and the ensemble. As writer and unabashed bohemian Toulouse-Lautrec, Jason Pennycooke steals every scene he's in, and Elia Lo Tauro oozes charisma as Christian's rapscallion friend Santiago. Clive Carter channels Jim Broadbent from the film in a pitch-perfect portrayal of the club's emcee Harold Zidler, and every ensemble dancer deserves their own shoutout for the hard work and energy they're delivering onstage.&nbsp;After all, theatre and the Moulin Rouge are about family and community, something we've all been missing these past few years. Watching a powerful show where despite trials onstage and off, the power and perseverance of the human spirit is what overcomes, is healing. And as soon as those snaps click into place at the top of "Lady Marmalade," you know you're safe to go along for the ride. Piccadilly Theatre - TodayTix

The Piccadilly Theatre opened on 27 Apr. 1928. The Piccadilly Theatre opened with a production of *Blue Eyes*, but then the theatre was turned into a cinema by Warner Brothers and was the house of the very first talking picture to be shown in England – Al Jolson in *The Singing Fool*. 

Suffering considerable damage during World War II, the venue had to be partially rebuilt and reopened again in April 1945 with a production of Agatha Christie’s *Appointment with Death*.

The Piccadilly Theatre is also known for the ITV variety show *Live From the Piccadilly* which began in 1986, playing on Sunday evenings and hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck. [Ian McKellen](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/ian-mckellen), [Judi Dench](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/judi-dench), Barbara Dickson, Lynn Redgrave, Julia McKenzie and Dame Edna all appearing in productions over the years.

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Royal Circle and Grand Circle.

The Stalls offers very good views of the stage, with a noticeable rake in the seating.

The overhang of the Royal Circle affects the view from Row F onwards, but the seating at this level is very well raked which allows for excellent views.

The Grand Circle is well-raked, allowing good views of the stage, but the legroom is rather slim at this level.

- 6,000 beads, with 35 beads to an individual string, make up the iconic chandelier featured in *Phantom of the Opera*. At a whopping three metres wide, and with a weight of one ton, it’s not exactly one for your living room.
- It takes 130 people to put on a performance of *Phantom of the Opera* in London. That includes the cast, creatives and backstage crew. Included in this team are 14 dressers who manage the 230 costumes in the show. They're in charge of everything from ballet shoes to ballgowns.
- Creating the eerie effects in the Phantom's lair in *Phantom of the Opera* requires a lot of effort. Each performance uses 50 kg of dry ice and 10 fog and smoke machines to capture the haunting atmosphere.

The latter has been impressively running non-stop at <a href="/theatres/her-majestys-theatre">Her Majesty's Theatre</a>&nbsp;for over 3 decades now, but does Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical still have the same sense of wonder as it did all that time ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;There's no question that it's a complete classic: the story tells of the titular phantom who haunts an opera house, the tales of his presence in the building are now common gossip amongst the casts. During rehearsals for the company's latest offering, an unknown chorus girl, Christine, is forced to thrust into the lead role, with the producers assured she has been taught well. Taught, it turns out, by the 'Angel of Music', the Phantom whose voice rings around in her head.During her triumphant performance, an old friend Raoul rekindles his love for Christine, while the Phantom reveals himself to Christine, luring her to his underground lair. As he tells her how she's been chosen to perform his work-in-progress opera, she lifts his mask to reveal his gruesomely disfigured face, and this begins a tale of jealousy and control.While its reputation as the ultimate romantic musical precedes it, watching the show in the #MeToo era throws up for a few uneasy moments. As the Phantom's manipulation and desire to control Christine become more and more apparent - through some pretty no-nonsense lyrics like "You will curse the day you did not do /All that the Phantom asked of you" - it's difficult not to feel for her as she is trapped and manipulated by a selfish, jealous man.It did create two of the most desirable roles for any musical theatre performer. Originated by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, the production currently features an excellent leading cast of <a href="/theatre-news/interviews/ben-lewis-interview-meet-the-west-ends-new-phantom-of-the-opera">Ben Lewis</a> and Kelly Mathieson. Lewis commands every corner of the stage with the menace of the Phantom, while treating his more tender moments with the deluded pain the character demands. Mathieson plays Christine with the kind of innocent naivety that makes the part convincing, and nails some of the most challenging songs written for the stage.There is still something special about Lloyd Webber's score. Its songs were revelations that shook musical theatre, standards that entered the public consciousness. The '80s synth-opera fusion might seem a little dated, but there's no disputing that descending motif still conjures goose bumps. At the heart of "The Point of No Return" - the Phantom's composition - are the satisfying resolved phrases that are a trademark of the score.In 2018, it's difficult for one to imagine the reaction this production would have received in the '80s. It's wildly over the top - complete with its iconic set pieces, fireballs, and an elephant &nbsp;- and some of these elements raise a chuckle or two at the confidence it must have taken to pull them off. A theatre has stood on the site of His Majesty's Theatre since 1705. This incarnation of His Majesty’s Theatre opened in 1897. The theatre changed names from Her Majesty's Theatre to His Majesty's Theatre on 6 May 2023, in line with King Charles III's Coronation.

The His Majesty's Theatre auditorium is appropriately scaled to house musicals. Throughout the 20th century, a host of musicals played at Her Majesty's Theatre: *Brigadoon*, *Paint Your Wagon*, *Bye Bye Birdie*, *West Side Story*, *On The Twentieth Century*, *Fiddler on the Roof* and *Bugsy Malone*.

Views from the Stalls are very good. Other than the front row, the legroom is good throughout the Stalls.
